For five days from March 18-22, 2024, the ten participants from Lower Saxony, Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Brandenburg and Bremen tested laboratory methods that are used in basic medical research and with which samples of patients are examined.
“We learned new techniques that haven't even arrived at school yet,” praises Anna. Jasmin appreciates being able to use methods that she has only heard about in the media, such as CRISPRn, in practice herself. Emma is taking home a boost of motivation for the future and her studies, and everyone agrees that they had plenty of fun.
The program covered modern and basic biomedical methods used to investigate the function of genes and their products in cells, e.g. DNA and protein isolation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), ELISA, various microscopy techniques, cell culture and CRISPR/Cas editing. Another focus was on the development of antibiotic resistance and new strategies for the treatment of infections, e.g. phage therapy. During an excursion, the participants were given an insight into the research areas at the German Primate Center.
