Six participants from different countries came together to deepen their scientific interests and gain valuable practical experience. The group was made up of young people who had different motives for taking part: some wanted to consolidate their decision to study biology or medicine. Others saw the camp as an opportunity to get to know biology as a complementary science to chemistry, or took the opportunity to rediscover the subject of biology after not enjoying it at school.
The camp fulfilled all these expectations and offered the participants a unique opportunity to get to know and apply science-related techniques themselves. As part of the program, they performed laboratory techniques on current topics such as CRISPR, eukaryotic gene regulation, human genetics and immunology, among others. These hands-on sessions allowed them to gain deeper insights into modern biomedicine and combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills.
The highlight of the week was a visit to the Institute of Molecular Biology at the University Medical Center Göttingen, where the participants were personally welcomed by Director Prof. Markus Bohnsack, who even is acitive in the function of the speaker for the SFB1565 research network. Prof. Bohnsack gave the young scientists an exclusive insight into his scientific institution and shared his expertise in an exciting tour of the laboratory. It was particularly impressive that Prof. Bohnsack took a lot of time after the lab tour to answer important questions about professional orientation and career planning. This direct exchange was particularly appreciated by the participants and rounded off the instructive week perfectly.
