Human Genetics
For Student Groups
How are hereditary diseases diagnosed? The phases of mitosis, the structure of chromosomes and their analysis are the focus of this course. The inheritance of genetic traits is discussed using the example of blood groups.
- Age
- 15 to 17
- Duration
- 1 day
- Maximum number of participants
- 24 (48 after consultation)
Experiments
- Blood group determination
- Preparation of metaphase chromosomes from tumor cells
- Fluorescence microscopic detection of mitotic cells
Students isolate metaphase chromosomes from human cells and learn how to create a karyogram that can be used to detect chromosomal abnormalities. Other stages of mitosis can be detected microscopically using a fluorescent DNA marker in tumor cells. In addition, a cross-test is carried out with artificial blood. Digital applications are an everyday tool in biological research, just like pipettes and beakers. We therefore provide an introduction to the use of digital tools and databases.
