At ECM 33 (33rd European Crystallographic Meeting), Dr. Erhard Irmer received the poster award in General Interest Group 3, "Education in Crystallography", sponsored by the publisher Oxford University Press, for his poster "Expanding Horizons: The Use of Crystal Structures in High School Chemistry Classes". Professor John Helliwell of the University of Manchester presented the award at the closing ceremony. At the international meeting in Versailles from August 23-27, 2022, about 900 chemists, physicists, biologists, physicians, biochemists, mineralogists, mathematicians and computer scientists exchanged ideas in a total of 48 microsymposia, two of which were dedicated to the topic of "Education".
Dr. Erhard Irmer received his doctorate under Professor George M. Sheldrick on the further development of methods for X-ray structure refinement and has written several publications on didactics on this topic. At XLAB he trains teachers and uses the crystal structures from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) e.g. in the student courses Structural Analysis of an Organic Substance and Aspirin – Synthesis and Analysis.
