During the first week of the International Science Camp, twelve young people conducted an in-depth theoretical and practical investigation of the function and performance of the nervous system. Under the guidance of instructors Dr. Michael Ferber and Dr. Joachim Rosenbusch, they applied the knowledge they had acquired to the generation of action potentials following basic experiments, such as measuring how membrane potential varies with different ion concentrations. An important part of the course focused on the visual system of the European migratory locust (Locusta migratoria), which was used as a model for recording electroretinograms; the dissection of the central nervous system of mammals, using a pig brain, was also a key component and proved very impressive to many participants.
