Investigation of a stream system

In this two- to four-day course a 36 km2 mountain stream system is investigated from source to mouth, including its floodplain and watershed. Surveys of the hydro-morphological structure, physico-chemical measurements and biological collections will be made at key points in the stream system. Animal identification, further water analysis and comprehensive evaluation will be done in the lab. Some tributaries and their subwatersheds will be characterized with respect to ecological quality of the streams, land use obtained from satellite images, potential erosion and soil nutrient status. Thus, relationships between watershed disturbance and stream quality degradation are addressed and an understanding of interconnections in the stream, floodplain and watershed system is gained.
