From alcohol to apple aroma - Redoxreactions in Organic Chemistry

Oxygen-containing organic compounds play an important role in many fields of daily life. For example fruit fragrances often contain a variety of these substances.

In this course the students have the opportunity to produce selected alkanals, alkanones, alkanoic acids and esters. Most of these substances are included in apple aroma.

The students will learn about redox reactions of alkanols and their oxidation products, as well as their properties. In addition, some of the synthesised compounds are analysed by gas chromatography.

Recommended: students from grade 11 on
Duration: 1 – 1.5 days (Depending on the number of experiments)
